I joined ING Investment Management in 2008 as a management trainee under the ING Talent Programme – Investment Management Track. During the first 18 months of the programme, I participated in two very interesting assignments in equity investment and fixed income investments respectively. Since late 2009, I started to work as a junior investment manager in the Emerging Markets Debt team within Global Emerging Market boutique.

The investment management traineeship is unique because it offers steep multi-dimension learning curve. Multi-dimension means theory, practices and personality. For example, during my 18 months rotation period, besides soft skills and theoretical investment knowledge training, I had the chance to learn industry practices by closely working with two very experienced managers. Both of them have very in-depth knowledge in the asset class they manage, and both of them have seen the cycle of bull and bear markets. This was very crucial for me as a relatively new joiner in the asset management industry, because they taught me a lot of practical knowledge which contributed substantially to my future career development.

What I find most challenging about my job is: everything is possible. Everyday I walk into the office, there is a certain amount of daily routine; nevertheless, I spend quite a lot of my time to fight with the unknown or uncertainty coming from the financial markets, the clients we service and the company. In the fighting process, the uncertainties have gradually trained me to become a more efficient and more prepared “fire fighter” to take on the next big challenge. Sometime, I might feel tired, but I never feel bored. As a person who is passionate about changes, I find ING IM is indeed a truly dynamic organisation.
