I am co-responsible for managing our European investment-grade corporate bond portfolios on behalf of our clients. On a daily basis, we monitor macro-economic, sector and company trends and screen the market for opportunities. We discuss these within our team and decide if we want to implement these in our portfolios. Besides, I read a lot of research, analyze and build company financial models, meet company management and work on our proprietary tools.
I started my career as a management trainee within ING IM in January 2008. I used my short-term assignments to get acquainted with our Institutional Business Development, Multi-Asset Group and Legal Investment Support teams. I hold Master’s degrees in Financial Economics and Financial Law from Erasmus University Rotterdam and I am currently finishing my Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy.
I felt originally attracted to Asset Management because of my passion for investments and international capital markets. Besides, our culture of teamwork stimulates informal conversations about market trends between teams and senior management is committed to provide plenty of opportunities for junior team members to take on significant responsibilities independently. Attracting and developing the best people is of paramount importance to our firm.
Our traineeship programme offers the unique opportunity to start your career on the buy-side with exposure to different asset classes during 6-month assignments. This enables you to match your skill-set to an asset class of your interest before you assume a full-time position.
My advice to graduates looking to pursue a career in Asset Management is to have a strong work ethic, be pro-active and be intellectually curious. Curiosity enables you to spot trends early and find logical connections in a constantly changing world. And although Asset Management is a highly competitive and demanding business, it allows for a healthy work-life balance. And finally, you’ll see the impact of your investment ideas directly reflected in portfolio performance: exciting and fun!
